Notes on 6 Ward Street, Salem
According to Patricia Kelleher at the Salem Historical Commission, all of the buildings at the point
were destroyed in the Great Fire, which happened on June 25, 1914.
In reviewing both the current assessor’s map and the 1911 Walker Lithograph and Publishing
Company Map, it would appear that the lot area that was 4 Ward Street on the 1911 map is the area
that is now 6 Ward Street on the current assessor’s map.
Prior to the fire, the area that is 6 Ward Street was owned by the heirs of Timothy Kirby,
Mary E.
Kirby and Margaret T. Kirby, both of Salem. Timothy Kirby likely passed away around the year 1875.
The pamphlet “1914 Data on Burned District at Salem, MA”, published by F.W. Dodge Co. lists
Timothy Kirby as the owner of a wooden residence at 4 Ward Street.
The heirs or Timothy Kirby, Mary E. Kirby and Margaret T. Kirby, sold the lot to Claire Berube on April
26, 1915.
There does not appear to be a building inspection card referencing 4 or 6 Ward Street deposited at the
Salem Historical Commission which confirms building date. According to the Salem Assessor’s
records, they believe the building at 6 Ward Street was built about 1914. The deed from Mary E. Kirby
and Margaret T. Kirby states that they conveyed “the land in said Salem.”
Based on the above evidence and the records listed below indicates that Claire Berube and her
husband, Alfred Berube, were the owners of the land when the building now known as 6 Ward Street
was built c. 1915.

According to various Salem Town Directories in 1917 and 1920, Alfred Berube appears to have been
running his “painter & paper hangers, paints oils glass & wallpapers” business out of the property
known as 6 Ward Street but lived at 12 Cabot Street. The 1920 United States Census confirms that
Claire and Alfred Berube lived in Salem at 12 Cabot Street and that Alfred worked as a house painter
and had his own shop. They had 11 children living with them and all are listed as being born in
Canada, French being their mother tongue. From the census record, it appears that Claire and Alfred
immigrated to the United States in 1890 and that they became citizens in 1909 and 1908. In 1920,
Alfred could speak English but Claire could not, Alfred was 44 and Claire was 42.
