<text>Notes on 52 Ward Street, Salem

According to Patricia Kelleher at the Salem Historical Commission, all of the buildings at the point
were destroyed in the Great Fire, which happened on June 25, 1914.

In reviewing both the current assessor’s map and the 1911 Walker Lithograph and Publishing
Company Map, it would appear that the lot area that was 36-38-40 Ward Street on the 1911 map
includes the area that is now 52 Ward Street on the current assessor’s map.

Prior to the fire, the area that is 52 Ward Street was owned by Mendel Coller and Louis Coller. The
pamphlet “1914 Data on Burned District at Salem, MA”, published by F.W. Dodge Co. lists Louis
Colllier as owning wooden apartments and stores on the site. After the fire, the property was
transferred a number of times in 1915 until it is finally conveyed to Joseph Wolocko and Zofia
Wolocko. Based on the Building Inspection Records from the Salem Historical Commission, Joseph
Wolocko was likely the owner of the building at 52 Ward Street when it was inspected by the City for
habitation on September 2, 1915; the inspection card names the structure the “Wolocko Building.”
The following evidence indicates that Joseph and Zophia Wolocko were the owners of the property
that is now 52 Ward Street when it was inspected and that the building was built in 1915:

Deed descriptions from the Essex South County Registry of Deeds—1915 deeds are all dated in the
Spring/Early Summer of 1915 and the inspection took place on September 2, 1915

Plans on record at the Essex South County Registry of Deeds, especially the plan recorded at Book
2298, Page 200.

Building Inspection records from the Salem Historical Commission as noted above.

According to Salem Town Directories in 1917 and 1918, Joseph Wolocko’s profession is listed as
“shoe worker” and that he and “Sophia” were living at 52 Ward Street. Joseph and Sophia Wolocko
appear in the 1920 United States Census, shown as living at 52 Ward Street with their three children,
all born in Massachusetts. Their immigration year appears to be about 1907 and Joseph is 38 years of
age and Sophia is 35 years of age in 1920. They are both from “Poland Russia” and their native
tongue is Russian. The 1920 census also reveals that Joseph and Mary cannot speak English and
they are “alien citizens.” In addition, the record states that Joseph could read and write but Sophia
could not.
