16 Crombie Street
Built in 1834
for
Samuel Ferguson, Painter
Research by Donna Vinson
February, 1992
16 Crombie Street
The Ferguson-Fellows House
Built in 1834 for Samuel Ferguson, Painter
History of the Property:
The lot on which 16 Crombie Street now stands is part of a much
larger lot which served as a pasture for the Corwin family in the
seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Their house was <and is)
located on the corner of Essex and North Streets, the present-day
"Witch House".
The patriarch of the family, Captain George Corwin,
died in early 1685 and his executors inventoried his property and
possessions shortly thereafter.
Valued at ninety pounds was "the
pastor, qt. about 3 acres and 1/2, considering a buriall place ther
apointed"
(George Francis Dow, "An Inventory of the Contents of the
Shop and House of Captain George Corwin", Privately Printed in Salem,
1910, p. 5).
Captain Corwin bequeathed his house and a half part of the
pasture to his son Jonathan, who served as one of the judges in the
Salem Witch Trials seven years later.
In order to distance themselves
from his involvement, later generations of the family referred to
themselves as "Curwins" and "Curwens" after the judge's death in 1718.
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Reverend Bentley
reports that the pasture located between Essex, Summer, Norman, and the
newly-laid-out Crombie's "lane" or "court" was still called "Curwen's
field" even though it had passed to a succession of unrelated owners,
including members of the Cabot, Crombie, and Baker families.
"Curwen's field" remained undeveloped pastureland until Benjamim
Crombie began laying out a lane to Norman Street on the land adjoining
his Essex Street tavern, the "Sign of the Ship", after 1805.
Nearly
twenty years later, the "lane", "court", and finally "street", was
completed.
As the path gradually progressed southward, Crombie sold
off parts of his property to various Salem grantees, "together with a
right and privilege of free egress and regress of said way for
themselves, their heirs and assigns, and their servants on foot and in
carriages, for their cattle, carts, and otherwise, in as full and ample
a manner as the Inhabitants of said Salem use the Streets of said Town"
<Essex County Registry of Deeds, Book 179, leaf 222).
Joseph Baker,
Salem merchant, appears to have been the largest purchaser of the new
Crombie Street property <E.C.R.D. Book 179, leaves 221-223>.
Baker sold part of his newly-acquired property to James Bott,
Jr., saddler and son of the famed Salem chaisemaker and namesake of
"Bott's Court", further west along Essex Street, in 1807 <E.C.R.D. Book
181, leaves 103-104>.
Bott purchased additional property on Crombie
Street in the following year, financing both purchases with mortgages
granted by the sellers, Baker and Thorndike Deland <E.C.R.D. Book 182,
leaves 285-287>.
Bott's mortgages apparently became so burdensome that
he was compelled to sell his Crombie Street properties at a loss to his
more established father in 1811 <E.C.R.D. Book 192, leaves 259-260).
James Bott Sr. held the estate, one of many in Salem he possessed,
until his death in 1829 at the venerable age of eighty-four.
The elder Bott possessed not only many properties in Salem but
also many heirs, and so the settlement of his estate took several
years.
In 1833, one of Bott's grandchildren, Samuel Ferguson, bought
the shares of his siblings in the Crombie Street property and erected a
house on the consolidated estate in the following year <E.C.R.D. Book
274, leaves 51-52).
Either he did not intend, or could not afford, to
live in the new house as he sold it to Oliver Fellows, shipwright and
"caulker", only a year later <E.C.R.D. Book 284, leaves 181-182).
The Fellows family remained in residence at 16 Crombie Street for
over forty years.
Mrs. Fellows lived there alone after her husband's
death in the 1860s, and her heirs sold the property to Lydia Woodbury,
widow of Stephen Woodbury of Salem, after their mother's death
<E.C.R.D. Book 972, leaves 175-176).
From time to time Mrs. Woodbury
took in tenants and residents to live with her, and in her later years
a niece, Miss H.P. English, was in residence.
After Lydia Woodbury's
death in 1900 her heirs sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. George A.
Stevens of Salem <E.C.R.D. Book 1620, pages 57-58>.
George Stevens was
a guard at the nearby Mercantile National Bank on Essex Street
<Salem
Directory, 1901). Della Stevens Bogart and her husband Harry, a
clerk, came into possession of the house after her mother's death in
1921 <E.C.R.D. Book 2501, pages 435-437>. The Bogarts also took in
occasional boarders <Salem Directories, 1921-1931).
After ten years in residence, the Bogarts sold 16 Crombie Street
to Franklin and Margaret O'Brien of Salem, who occupied the house until

ONE DEARBORN STREET
Built for
WILLIAM MAYNES, haberdasher
in 1869
Research:
Donna Vinson
January, 1993
ONE DEARBORN STREET
Built in 1869 by William Maynes, Haberdasher
History of the Property:
The house presently bearing the address One Dearborn Street was
built in 1869 by William Maynes, provisioner of "hats, caps and furs"
as an investment property.
Maynes then occupied an adjoining house on
the corner of North and Dearborn Streets and operated a
b~siness
at 88
Nor th Street.
The parcels of land on which Maynes' two DearLorn street houses
were erected had been purchased from the city of Salem in 1867-1868
<Essex County Registry of Deeds, Book 737, leaf 246 and Book 745, leaf
264).
North Salem, known as Northfields until well into the nineteenth
century, was pastureland for Salem's seventeenth- and eighteenthcentury settlers.
Parcels of land were distributed to Salem
householders in ten-acre lots by the town council from 1634 tu 1611,
but the Maynes lots somehow escaped distribution, despite the laying
out of North Street in the eighteenth century.
The main thoroughfare
of Northfields, North Street was alternatively called "Proprietors'
Way", "Weld's Lane", and the "Highway through ye Nor\-nfield" until the
following century.
Dearborn Street was laid out by the proprietors of Northfields
from North Street to "Rope's Point" on the North River in 1787 in an
attempt to capture the proposed bridge to Beverly for their
neighborhood.
They were not successful, and consequently Dearou1n
Street began developing shortly thereafter along residential, rather
than commercial, lines.
In 1868, when William Maynes purchased "a
certain parcel of land situate in Northfields" bounded by North Street
from the city of Salem, little pastureland remained on Dearborn Street.
Maynes retained his Dearborn Street property for less th,
decade.
a
In 1877 he sold "a parcel of land, upon which are two dwelling
houses, situated in said Salem, beginning at the corner of North and
Dearborn Streets and thence running Northeasterly by Dearborn Street
ninety-four feet and nine inches more or less .... '' to
Tho~os
Symonds of
Salem, a descendant of the first settler of North Salem <E.C.R.D. Book
986, leaf 81).
The Symonds family possessed numerous
properti~s
in the
neighborhood, and so One Dearborn Street was let to Lneir daughter and
son-in-law Anna and Joseph Waldron, after their marriage in 1886 <Salem
Directories, 1886-1900).
Evans, a Chelsea clerk.
The Waldrons shared the house with Alvin
After Thomas Symonds died in 1900, his widow
Mary Ann conveyed One Dearborn Street to her daughter Anna S. Waldron
for "love and affection and $1" <E.C.R.D Book 1603, page 567).
The
Waldrons did not reside at their newly-acquired house for long; it
remained a two-family house and was successively leased out to the
Mansfield, Pepper, Putnam, Delaney, and Kingsley families for the term
of tl1eir possession <Salem Directories, 1900-i923).
The heirs-at-law of Anna Waldron sold the "certain parcel of land
together with the buildings thereon being numbered One on Dearborn
Street in said Salem" to Mary Clancey of Salem,
<E.C.R.D. Book 2541, page 357).
ei
1~idow,
i11 1923
Mrs. Clancey held on to the property
for only a year, after which it was transferred to Fred and Katherine
Litka of Salem (E.C.R.D. Book 2586, page 145).
Mr. Litka, a
shoeworker, and his wife occupied the house exclusively during their
three years of possession, then sold the property to Mary L. Creeden of
Salem, another widow <E.C.R.D. Book 2730, page 14).
Mary Creeden occupied part of One Dearborn Street during her
thirty-year period of ownership, while the other part of the huLSe was
leased to a succession of widows and leatherworkers (Salem
Directories, 1927-1957).
In 1957 Mrs. Creeden conveyed One Dearborn
Street to Marie E. Reardon and Mary Almeida, both of Salem, and the
former continues to own and occupy the property (E.C.R.D. Book 4414,
page 269).

ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
The house at 28 Arbella Street is set on the back lot between 26 and 30-32 Arbella Street. The 1 ½-story, side-gabled dwelling
is set on a brick foundation and is sheathed in asbestos shingles. The gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles with
overhanging eaves ending in returns. Centered on the three-bay facade, the main entrance is sheltered by a well-preserved,
flat-roofed denticulated door hood with the two brackets adorned by large beads, rondels and pendants. The door itself is a
modern multi-light replacement but it is capped by two original transom lights. The adjacent window openings have modern 2/2
vinyl sash but retain molded surrounds and entablature lintels set on brackets that are smaller versions of those on the entrance.
The shed dormer spanning the front roof slope is a later addition. Aligned with the east wall of the house is a single-story ell and
a rear deck.
This house is a contributing property in the Bridge Street Neck Historic District, listed on the National Register on July 19, 2002.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
It appears that this house may have been originally located on the present site of 30-32 Arbella Street. The 1874 map shows a
house with roughly this shape on that site, owned by William H. Plummer. Plummer was a shoemaker who lived at 16 Saunders
Street and apparently rented this house out.
The 1897 map shows the land was still vacant at that time but was owned by William H. Edwards a contractor and building
mover. The house appears to have been moved to its present site about 1906. The 1911 map shows a house believed to be 28
Arbella Street (?) in place, but without the rear ell and aligned directly behind #26. This house along with 22, 24, 26, and 30 , is
shown as being owned by William H. Edwards although deeds suggest he sold the property in 1910 (see below).
From 1907 to about 1910 the house (then 10 ½ Arbella Street) was rented to George S. Norton who worked as a traveling
salesman for an oil company. He lived here with his wife May, two daughters, his mother Emeline and his father George. In
1917 the house number was changed from 10 ½ to 28.
Deeds indicate that in 1910 the entire Arbella Street property was sold by William H. Edwards to Alice R. Meek (Book 2028,
Page 570). Miss Meek apparently purchased them as income-producing properties. She lived on Essex Street and was the
head of the Henry M. Meek Publishing Company, makers of directories. The property was sold by Annie (Meek) Hutchins and
Mabel Adlard to Martin and Mary Callahan in 1948 (Book 3637/205). Census records indicate that in 1920 the house was rented
to Louis Benway, a French Canadian wagon driver for a coal company. He lived here with his wife Hattie, two daughters, two
sons and a son-in-law.
