According to Patricia Kelleher at the Salem Historical Commission, all of the buildings at the point
were destroyed in the Great Fire, which happened on June 25, 1914.

In reviewing both the current assessor’s map and the 1911 Walker Lithograph and Publishing
Company Map, it would appear that the lot area that was 22-24 Palmer Street on the 1911 map is the
area that is now 71 Palmer Street on the current assessor’s map.

Prior to the fire, the area that is 71 Palmer Street was owned by Pierre Tremblay. The pamphlet “1914
Data on Burned District at Salem, MA”, published by F.W. Dodge Co. lists Pierre Tremblay as owning
wooden apartments on the site. He retained ownership after the fire until 1918 and it appears he
owned the building at the time it was erected. Records at the Salem Assessor’s Office date the
building to 1915. Building inspection cards deposited at the Salem Historical Commission do not
include a card referencing 22-24 Palmer Street or the name Pierre Tremblay which would confirm the
building date. The following evidence noted above and below indicates that Pierre Tremblay was the
owner of the property that is now 71 Palmer Street when it was built c. 1915:

Deed descriptions from the Essex South County Registry of Deeds

MACRIS On-Line Database

~

There are entries for Pierre Tremblay in the Salem Directories in 1914-1918 which list him as being
either a “laborer” or “foundryman” but his housing location is not on Palmer Street. Under the name
“Peter Trembley,” the 1910 United States census reveals Peter living with his wife Mary on Palmer
Street (no number given), along with 8 children. He is listed as a renter and as a dealer in coal. He is
French Canadian, as is his wife Mary, and they immigrated to the United States in 1895. He and Mary
are 54 and 45 respectively. 6 of their 8 children were born in Massachusetts, the first two having been
born in French Canada. The children are listed as speaking English and as being literate, while Peter
and Mary are listed as speaking French and being literate as well as being alien citizens. There does
not appear to be an entry in the 1920 census for either Pierre or Peter Tremblay who lived in Salem.
The 1900 United States Census lists similar information about “Pierre and P. Maria Trembley” who
lived on Palmer Street and owned the residence on Palmer Street.
