SUNHARY
#60 Derby St., Formerly #28
Williara Hollinbsworth had a house on this land before 1661.

The house

burned in 1663 and he moved to 21 Derby Street until 1672, when he built

.

another house on this site.

,.

The house became the famed Blue Anchor Tavern .

William's wife, Eleanor, was licensed to draw beer and elder on April 23,

1674.

She conducted the Tavern until 1681.

It was still ccn<lucted as a

Tavern until February 24, 1748, at which time Mrs. llollinGsworth's grandson,
Philip English sold the. estate to C. Richard Derby.

Derby tore the house

down in 1751.

26 Derby may be the "outer housing 11 mentioned in the deed when Eleanor
· Hollingsworth gave the estate to her daughter, Uary Hollingsworth Engllsh,
April 8, 1685, "I confirm, into iay sd. daughter, all that my now dwelling house,

the Tavern was near the sc.arting point of the Marblehead Ferry (Darbie Fort

-

Side Ferry), before the opening of Lafayette Street the only means of getting
to Marblehead.

The Marblehead landing was at Haskell's Cove, a little to the

west of Naugus Head.
William and Eleanor's daughter Hary (the "accused") Hollingsworth, was
born at the Blue Anchor.

She married Philip English (Philippe L' Anglois) who

was born on the Isle of Jersey in 1651, and \,·as in Salem ln 1074.
