The House History of 28 Clark Street
The house at 28 Clark Street in Salem was built in 1984 for Ernest C. and Phyllis L.
(Hewitt ) Dearborn. Ernest (b. 1922) was a Lynn native and a firefighter for the Lynn Fire
Department for 32 years. Phyllis (b. 1931) was raised in Peabody and graduated from
Peabody High School in 1949. Phyllis was an assembler for the Sylvania Company in
Salem.
The Sylvania company dates back to 1901 when it got its start renewing burned-out
light bulbs. In 1916, they opened a new plant and headquarters in Salem to produce
tungsten filament light bulbs. They purchased the site of two burned-out tanneries at the
corner of Boston and Bridge Streets and built the first of what would be two major
manufacturing facilities in the city. The building on the corner of Boston and Bridge
Streets has since been demolished and is the site of a planned development known as
the Gateway Center. The other site, in South Salem, is now part of Salem State
University's Central Campus.
Before marrying Phyllis, Ernest fathered two children: Richard and Susan. Phyllis and
Ernest married in 1971 and lived on Tracy Avenue in Lynn. The Dearborns moved to
Salem in 1984 after Ernest retired from the fire department. They purchased land and
had a house built at 28 Clark Street. Phyllis enjoyed gardening in her yard on Clark
Street. After Ernest past away in 1999, Phyllis continued to live there until her death in
2013.
Ty J. and Micah L. Hapworth purchased 28 Clark Street in 2014 after relocating from
Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Ty and Micah commissioned to have the house history
and plaque created.
As of 2017, the house at 28 Clark Street is a ranch style home with a gable roof situated
on .35 acres of land.
