According to Patricia Kelleher at the Salem Historical Commission, all of the buildings at the point
were destroyed in the Great Fire, which happened on June 25, 1914.

In reviewing both the current assessor’s map and the 1911 Walker Lithograph and Publishing
Company Map, it would appear that the lot area that was 9-11-13 Ward Street on the 1911 map is the
area that is now 17-19 Ward Street on the current assessor’s map.

Prior to the fire, the area that is 17-19 Ward Street was owned by three parties:

William E. Barry

James J. Welch
Bernard Thibault

The pamphlet “1914 Data on Burned District at Salem, MA”, published by F.W. Dodge Co. lists
Catherine Barry as owning a wooden residence at 9 Ward Street, James J. Welch as owning a wooden
residence and Bernard Thibault as owning wooden apartments at 13 Ward Street.

These three parties all sold their land after the fire in December 1914. They sold their lots to

David Land of Salem. The following evidence indicates that David Land was the likely builder of the
property that is now 17-19 Ward Street and that the building was built c. 1915:

Deed descriptions from the Essex South County Registry of Deeds

Plans on record at the Essex South County Registry of Deeds, particularly those recorded at Book
2294, Page 133 and Book 2343, Page 495

Building Inspection records from the Salem Historical Commission—states that David Land was the
owner and A. Rosenstein was the architect. The building was inspected by “Cheney” on January 8,
1915.

~

According to Salem Town Directories in 1914 and 1915, David Land’s profession is listed as “Real
Estate.” According to the 1920 United States Census, he lived in Salem and his occupation was listed
as “Contractor/Real Estate.” His brother Jacob, with whom he lived, had his occupation listed as
“Carpenter/House.” In 1920, David Land was 34 years of age, born about 1886 in Russia; he
immigrated to the United States in 1904 and was naturalized in 1909. He was Jewish and his mother
tongue was Yiddish.
