Summary
The land on which this house stands was originally owned by Damaris Tozer by 1700, who owned a
house that had been torn down by 1761 when it was part of a larger lot owned by her son, William Tozer
(Sr.). That same year, William split the land into two lots that will become 7 Orange Street and the
backyard of today's Custom House. William's son, William Tozer, Jr., owned the lot where the house is
today and in 1763, after his father's death, purchased the other lot from his brother Ebenezer, a mariner,
and his sisters. William, Jr. died in 1769, leaving his estate to his widow, Abigail Metcalf Tozer, who sold
part of the 7 Orange Street lots to Ebenezer Tozer, her brother-in-law. Abigail then married James Cutler,
victualler, in 1776. At some point, the Cutlers and the Tozers decided to merge the properties and built the
house that stands today in 7 Orange Street, using the second lot as a yard. The Cutlers owned the first
floor while Ebenezer and his sisters owned the second floor and yard.
In 1783, James and Abigail Cutler sold their portion of the home to Elizabeth Millet, one of Ebenezer's
sisters. The following year, the Tozer family sold their portion of the house, including the yard, to Thomas
Chipman, a mariner. In 1792, Elizabeth Millet sold her part of the house to her son, John, who in turn sold
it to Thomas Chipman in 1801, allowing Thomas to unify the property. By that time, the Crowninshield
family had purchased the yard from Thomas, integrating it into their mansion that later became the site of
today's Custom House. At the time, the home likely was only two stories tall and half as wide as it is at
present. In 1812, Thomas Chipman sold the entire property to Robert Hussey, a mariner, whose family
remained in the house until at least 1874. The home has multiple residential units and has been used as a
multi-family home since the 19th century.
