<text>Notes on 45-49 Ward Street, Salem

According to Patricia Kelleher at the Salem Historical Commission, all of the buildings at the point
were destroyed in the Great Fire, which happened on June 25, 1914.

In reviewing both the current assessor’s map and the 1911 Walker Lithograph and Publishing
Company Map, it would appear that the lot area that was 27-29 Ward Street on the 1911 map includes
the area that is now 45-49 Ward Street on the current assessor’s map.

Prior to the fire, the area that is 45-49 Ward Street was owned by Frank and Mary Ciesznski. The
pamphlet “1914 Data on Burned District at Salem, MA”, published by F.W. Dodge Co. lists Mary
Ciesznski as owning a wooden residence on the site. They retained ownership after the fire and it
would seem they rebuilt on the same lot after the fire. Based on the Building Inspection Records from
the Salem Historical Commission, Frank and Mary Ciesznski were the owners and they likely directed
the building of 45-49 Ward Street; the inspection card names the structure the “Kocienski Building”
and it was inspected for habitation on January 7, 1915. The following evidence indicates that Frank
and Mary Ciesznski were the owners of the property that is now 45-49 Ward Street when it was
inspected and that the building was built in 1914-1915:

Deed descriptions from the Essex South County Registry of Deeds

Building Inspection records from the Salem Historical Commission as noted above.

According to the United States Census records from 1920, Frank and Mary Cieznski (written as
“Aesinski” in the 1920 census record) are shown as living at 49 Ward Street with their five children, one
born in Poland and the other four born in Massachusetts. Both Frank and Mary are listed as Polish
Russian and their immigration year to the United States appears to be about 1905. In 1920, the
census record records Frank to be 50 years old and Mary to be 46 years old. Their native tongue is
listed as Polish. The 1920 census also reveals that Joseph and Mary cannot speak English and they
are “alien citizens.” In addition, the 1920 census record states that neither Frank or Mary could read
and write and Frank worked as a “sticker” in a leather factory. Town directories state that Frank’s
occupation is that of “laborer.” The 1930 census reveals similar information about Frank and Mary.
