389 ESSEX STREET
BUILT BY 1882 FOR DAVID KILEY
The original house at 389 Essex street was built circa
1820 by Captain Henry King. King and his wife lived at that
address until Mrs. King's death in October 1880. Mr. King
died the following year. His son, Henry F. King, the trustee
of the will, sold the house and property to David Kiley in
1881. (Registry of Deeds, Book 1064 Pages 120-122)
Before moving to 389 Essex street, David Kiley had
resided at 23 Summer str6et Salem, and operated a liquor
dealership at 9 Derby street. Kiley had the old King house
removed and built a new home, in which he, and his wife and
two children moved into in 1882. The single family house is
a fine example of a V~ctorian eclectic dwelling of its time.
(further architectural details below)
David Kiley passed away less than three years after
building his new home. On June 3, 1885, his wife Ellen, as
legal guardian for their children Robert and David Kiley,
sold the house and property at public auction to Thomas
Hines (Hynes) of Lynn for the sum cf $6,000. (8ook1171 Page
117) The next year, however, Ellen Kiley bought the house
back from Hines, and then resold it to Charles Higbee of
Salem. (Book 1181 Page BO, Book 1181 Page 81)
Charles Higbee owned the house and property at 389
Essex street until his death in 1909. Upon his death, the
trustees of the Higbee estate, Fred H. Williams, Henry M.
Williams and Maria Higbee, decided to divide the original
property into two house lots (Book 1976 Page 61 see map at
the end of this document). T~1e new boundary lines, which
have remained to the present, were surveyed by Charles
Metcalf in June 1909. The house was then sold to Minnie
MacDonald for a consideration of one dollar, (Book 1969 Page
334-337)
In 1916 Minnie MacDonald sold the house to Elizabeth
Sheridan.
Sheridan sold the house to Elizabeth Williams of
Salem three years later. (Book 2334 Page 271, Book 2435 Page
547) Within one year Elizabeth Williams would sell the house
to Mary A. Brewer. (Book 2455 Pages 78-79)

In September of 1922 the house was again sold, this
time to Rachel and George Tucker of Salem. It is on this
deed that an easement en the property appears. The easement
fl
reads: ~aid premises are conveyed subject to the right of
the owner of said Emmerton land to erect and maintain a
fence upon the granted premi.ses for the distance of seven
inches only on ~he northerly side of the premises • • . . Rachel
and George also took out a mortgage cf $7~600 from the Salem
Five Cents Savings Bank to purchase their new home. (Book
2528 Pages 77-79)
r
The Tuckers lived at 389 Essex street for thirty three
years. In 1955, however, Rachel Tucker sold her house to
Thomas and Florence Cadorette. On August 22, 1957 Thomas
Cadorette passed away, leaving the house to his wife
FlorenrP. I~ 1961 she sold the house to Robert and
Antoinette Masse. The couple lived in the house until
Antoinette's death in 1967. (Book 4804 Page 103 Book 4400
Page 535 Book 5485 Page 139)
The following year(1968) Robert Masse sold his Essex
street house to Frank Bertini of Salem and Thomas Lotito of
Beverly. Both men shared ownership of the dwelling until
.1982, whEm Frank Ber·tini sold his "one-half intere!st as a
b:·m<::i.n t in common." For- thE> nel·: t b:m ye<::xrs Thomas L.clti to, a
drapery store owner, lived at the Essex street address. In
1988 Lotito received a mortgage for $225,000 from a Lynn
bank, but the mortgage was foreclosed on in July of 1992.
(Book 5572 Page 587 Book 6908 Page 74 Book 9382 Page 357
Book 11396 Pages 4-6 and 8) The house was then sold by the
First Colonial Bank for Savings in 1992, to Steven Sass and

NOTE-
The original house at 389 Essex street
was built circa 1820. Captain Henry King
and his wife lived together at the
residence from that time until Mrs.
King's death in October of 1880. Mr.
King died the fellowing year. Little
else is known of the couple.
The new owner, David Kiley, operated a
liquor dealership at 9 Derby street.
Kiley had the original King residence
torn down. His new home. an ornately
detailed wooden structure is a fine
example of a Victorian eclectic dwelling
of its time. Capped by a truncated
patterned slate mansard reef, the Kiley
house shows the hybrid influence of the
High Victorian Gothic (chevron window
hoods and porch gable), High Victorian
Italianate ( bay windows, eaves and
dormer brackets, the flat window hoods,
classical pilasters and porch columns,
and Stick (horizontal, vertical, and
diagonal wall boarding, exposed framing)
