23 Becket Street
The property was part of a larger tract of land that belonged to John Becket, a
shipbuilder, whose house was located at the end of the street, on Becket Avenue (The Retire
Becket House was moved to the House of the Seven Gables’ campus in 1924 to save it from
demolition). In 1769, John Becket sold the parcel of land corresponding to 23 and 25 Becket
Street to his son-in-law, William Peele, a cooper. Given his profession, Peele was
probably involved in the Beckets' shipbuilding business. Tax rolls show that William Peele
had been paying taxes for a house and a store since 1799. The 1800 census also
indicates that Peele was living at Becket Street, between his son-in-law, Alexander
Donaldson (known to have lived at 21 Becket Street) and John Becket. Of the two houses
today standing here, 23 is likely the earlier building. Unlike 25 Becket Street, which
corresponds to a later Greek-Revival style, 23 Becket Street is an example of the early
Federal style, common in Salem during the turn of the nineteenth century. Further, the
house is an exact twin of 19 Becket Street, built in 1784, which suggests that Peele might
have hired the same housewright.
1

After William’s death in 1817, his widow, Elizabeth Peele (née Becket), inherited the
homestead including the two houses that correspond today to 23 and 25 Becket Street. Upon her
death, her estate was auctioned off and sold to John Peterson. Peterson divided the property in
two and sold 23 Becket Street to two widows: Hannah Green and Mary Greenleaf. The widows
split the property between them. Hannah obtained the upper floor and Mary the lower floor,
while the yard, outbuildings, and cellar remained in common. By 1879, Hiram and Annie
Chase purchased both parts of the house, reuniting the property. The Chases added an
extension on the side of the building around 1882, which was rented out as a variety store.
