Description
Built by Daniel Bancroft for merchant William Pickman in 1823 on land inherited through their mother's family, the Toppans. Pickman, a bachelor, inhabited the house with his sister, Love Rawlins Pickman. They were the children of one of Salem's wealthiest Loyalist merchants, Benjamin Pickman, and his wife, Polly Toppan. The house passed to their relative Dr. George B. Loring, eminent physician and politician. It was later purchased by Jennie Emmerton, and remained the home of her daughter Caroline O. Emmerton.
