I lived in Boston for a year, and visited Salem once. I'm not a superstitious or fearful person- I swim in cool black night water or solo scuba diving a mile out, and have climbed Devils Tower, but the place gave me the creeps: the hackles went up on my neck even driving through it!!! I've been all through 47 states and 20 countries to type my essay on traveling, and never had such a feeling about anyplace- whatever madness possessed those people... it's still there.
